When a cracked sculpture is an advantage

When I had made my first red clay bust in the studio on a wood and metal armature I had to leave it to air dry because it could not be put in the kiln. Over the weekend I left it to dry out and was devastated to find out the following week that it had cracked massiively and was in danger of collapsing into pieces. Eventually I was led to understand that it had dried out too quickly and I should have covered it with a damp cloth to prevent the cracking. However, all was not lost because I learned also that I could try to make a cast from it and endeavour to make a subsequent mould from the cast for a replica bust to be made of the origin. Sculpture is very interesting and there is so much to learn. In the final analysis the cracks on the bust are really very beautiful and make it much more abject (my theme)than I could have imagined. This is the start of a lot of fascinating work.
